Can a person stop taking coumadin?

  1. Yes. You can discontinue use at anytime; however, if you take coumadin it's because you've probably been throwing clots in your veins.  If you want to take the risk that another clot will form and kill you or give you a nasty stroke or heart attack.  It takes time to build a level, so take the coumadin and eat, just watch how much Vitamin K you're getting.  It's better to be a little low on coumadin than high because of the risk of internal bleeding. That too can cause stroke.  It's rat poison.  It causes rats to bleed to death internally, so it's not something to be messed around with. I'm on it for life and it's a life time struggle, but I've been as low as 1.2 and as high as 7.4 when I couldn't eat. I'd rather be low than high.
