Question:

Can a person who is legally blind in one eye still race?

My Dad and I are putting together a modified racecar, and if my dad cannot race it, he would like me to be the first one to take the oppurtunity. However, I have been blind in my left eye since I was two. I still have some vision in it, but a cataract makes everything blurry and rather unrecognizable. However, I have perfect vision in my right eye.

I've dreamed of racing since I was little, but since I am blind in my left eye, will that end my racing dreams?

  1. If it's a weekly series at a local track there probably is no physical examination required. If you have to have a Nascar or other large sanctioning body license then there is a physical required. I don't know if you would be disallowed or not (i don't think you would) but it will be a handicap while driving because peripheral vision is important.

Call your local track and ask them the requirements to drive in your class .

  2. Well, maybe you can contact someone in the racing community.

They can look up th rules. And you can go to the eye doctor and check with him. Hope this helps! Best of luck!

  3. No, it will not end your dreams.  My dad has been blind in one eye since he was 10 or 11.  His entire racing career has been with only 1 good eye, and he has won many, many races, in many different classes, including a championship in what we in now call the "Sportsman" class.  He has raced UMP Late Models for the last 20 or so years.

It will not even limit your career.  As an example, Ernie Ervin, a NASCAR Winston Cup (now Sprint Cup) driver popular in the 1990's, developed double vision as a result of too many hard crashes, and was forced to wear an eye patch the last year or so of his career.  thus, he was effectively blind in one eye.

  4. the only limitations that you have to race are your own mind.i have raced with drivers who are paraplegic and have to use hand controls to race, drivers who have one arm and drivers who have one eye so there shouldnt be anything to stop you but your own mind.when i was younger i had an injury to my right eye that i had to wear an eye patch for a year and i didnt have a problem with the safety commitee nor them with me.go for it and dont let anyone tell you different.use a good helmet and safety gear keep your head on a swivel and race your line,if they are behind you they have to find a way around you.
