My grandfather is coming down to Florida soon and for some reason he wants to bring his handgun down in his check in bags. But he wants to have it with him while he's here.

  1. if you go to www.nra-ila.org and look at the gun laws link you can find which states will recognize the MA license. FL is not one of them so no he cannot use his license in FL.

  2. Your grandfather's conceal carry permit is valid in many other states as well as MA. Florida accepts AK conceal carry permits so I don't see why they wouldn't accept MA ones, though you don't actually need a permit in Alaska to conceal carry. The permit is just for use in other states. Florida is a "shall issue" state where any resident that can legally own a firearm and is over 21 can obtain a conceal carry permit. I don't see any reason he wouldn't be able to, but I would double check with a law enforcement agency in Florida to be 100%

  3. NO, not only NO, but h**l NO.

If he even attempts to do that he is inviting all kinds of trouble.  His Permit is only good in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.  Once out of the Commonwealth he is not covered, and if he is going to fly he will not get out of the airport.

  4. No. Your grandfather's License to Carry Firearms from Massachusetts is not recognized in Florida because Massachusetts does not recognize Florida's concealed carry permit. But wait! There is some good news.

He is allowed to have a gun in his vehicle as long as it is "securely encased" to mean "in a glove compartment, whether or not locked; snapped in a holster; in a gun case, whether or not locked; in a zippered gun case; or in a closed box or container which requires a lid or cover to be opened for access."

So, while you cannot carry the weapon on your person, you can at least have it nearby in your vehicle while traveling.

He can also apply for a non-resident permit. Check the links listed below for more information.

As for flying, he probably knows to check with the airline to find out what needs to be done to legally transport his gun.

  5. If your grandfathers carry permit is not recognised in Fl. he may apply for a Fl. carry permit as Fl. does issue to non-residents.  Then he can carry a concealed weapon in the great state of Florida!
