Can a person with a work permit in Canada drive down to th Unites States?

Is having a canadian work permit and drivers license sufficient? do they check everyone crossing the canadian border just to spend a day in new york?

Yes you can if you already have your canadian work permit you will be aloud, just bring your passport

Be more specific, what nationality are you??? Do you have a passport ?? Unless you are a Canadian citizen,  you will require a Passport from your home country. Going into the US, they will process you, if you do not have US id. Coming back to Canada, holding your work permit, will be a breeze. Also, if you have any criminal history, there's a chance they will deny you admission to the US. As long as you meet all the requirements for legal border crossings, you have no worries, just have all the proper documention before you get to the border.

depending on the country that issued your passport you may need a visitor visa,

if your not a Canadian permanent resident you will need a passport to go to the US after all it is another country
