If a pitcher is pitching, and then there is a pitching change, but the pitcher isn't taken out of the lineup and he just goes out to a position, then can he return to the mound later in the game?

  1. Yes he can. The only place I could find any rules is at MLB.com. I am not sure if in baseball, as in softball, but if the starting pitcher, and only the starting pitcher is removed, he/she can return as a pitcher, but only the starter.

  2. Yes, Whitey Herzog did it with several of his pitchers back in the 80s.

  3. the pitcher can be moved to another position, such as left field, then can be brought back to pitch, then can be moved to another position, then brought back to pitch. The manager may do this as often as he would like to! As long as the pitcher stays in the lineup, he can be moved around as much as the manager likes!!!!!!!!

  4. Yes but I believe he has to stay on the field

  5. Yes he can

  6. Yes, this happened earlier this year with the Braves.

Bobby Cox moved Blaine Boyer to left flield to let Will Ohman come in and face the lefty and then moved Blaine back to the pitching mound.

  7. Yes, as long as he stays in the game. Just like you can have a players start at SS, then move him to 2B in the middle of the game, and then back to SS later in the game.

  8. No idea. Good question.

  9. I think you are right about that. If that is how it goes I'm positive that you can only do it once. You can't pitch, move to a position, pitch, move to a position, and then pitch again.

I thik you can pitch, swith, and then pitch again.

  10. yes, it has been done many times

  11. Change positions -- yes, the pitcher can later return to the mound.

If he leaves the game, no -- baseball is single substitution.

  12. no it is not allwod in baseball

  13. No.

  14. Yes, as long as the pitcher plays another position.  For instance, he could be moved to first base, and then moved back to pitcher..

If the pitcher leaves the game without taking another position on the field, then he is out of the game and can't return.

  15. Yes this has been done before.   I think it was done with keith Comstock when he was pitching for the Giants against the braves.  I remember seeing the game.   Comstock was the last lefty available in the Giants bullpen and when the Braves sent up a right handed hitter they put him in the outfield and broght in a right hander.  When they sent up a lefty bat they would bring Comstock back in to pitch.
