  1. It depends.  Generally, no.  However, nypd has contracts with LIRR and the MTA and in those cases, sometimes.  Usually you would need your department issued card used for traveling those specific railways.

  2. I know that Police officers in West Yorkshire can ride the trains and buses for free. I also understand that the London and Transport Police also have similar set up in their areas.

I think its one of the perks of the jobs.

  3. No, it may not be illegal, but is unethical and a clear violation of department rules and procedures.  Unless of'course there is a prior arrangement by the police department and the rail carrier.

  4. Hi!

Yeah, they can travel anywhere in the UK for free as long as they show their ID.

    Hope this helps!

  5. In my force we get free rail and bus travel within our area if we are on or off duty. Some private companies let police ride for free on any any service, no matter what the destination.

The only exeption to this rule is air travel.

  6. Are you talking about the USA or UK?

In the UK certain police forces, officers are allowed a certain amount of free travel. Depends on which police force and where you are located.

For instance In London the Metropolitan Police have 70 miles free travel from London. Likewise the British Transport Police have free travel throughout the Railway network.....Though new officers don't have this entitlement  since the railways were privatised in the late 1990's.

The reason it's free is that Police officers who are on a train can be called upon by train staff to assist with public order situations.............drunk passengers etc

  7. It depends on any agreements between the rail agency and other law enforcement agencies. It's generally NOT for casual traveling (ie, no free vacations).

    Calif Deputy

  8. Mark how young are you?.

You got to be a little child aren't you?

Only a very young child would ask questions like this altho some time you fiend some adult behave like an infant but you

are young. Police do not have card mark, they have a badge & the badge take tham any where they want to go and they do not have to pay any thing OK?.

  9. It depends on the policy of the force and any arrangements with the local rail network.

The met police in London for example get free rail travel on the tube and some outgoing/incoming trains into london off duty/on duty.

However this is arranged between the rail network and the police and its expected that if anything goes on in the train the officer should deal with it.

Its not appropriate however to expect special privileges or discounts from any business or service where none are arranged between the force and that said business prior.

But yes some forces have arranged with the local networks and even bus networks free travel on production of a rail card on the basis the officer deals with any trouble that arrises when they travel.
