Can a pond in chess capture another piece vertically? Or just diagonaly?

  2. No, a pawn cannot capture vertically, only diagonally.

  5. A pawn can only capture a piece that is on the rank immediately in front of it, diagonally adjacent.  This makes the pawn unique in capturing, as it is the only piece whose capture move is different from its normal move.
