Question:

Can a potential employer contact your current employer?

Hi,

I recently had a job interview for a certain company and on the application it asked if they could contact my current employer. I checked No because I am currently working there, so I would not want them to know I am looking for a new job. Not to mention they have a history of giving bad recommendations for even the best of workers for leaving their company. Since the interview I have been receiving some suspicious treatment from my supervisor and its making me think that my potential employer may have contacted.

Is it legal for a potential employer to contact someones current employer when you already said they could not? What should I do?

Any advice is most helpful.

  1. Generally, this is not the case and they would not contact your present employer. Sometimes because you feel awkward about seeking another appointment it is reflected in your manner at work. This could create the reaction you notice from your supervisor. Have you told anybody else at work that you are thinking of leaving? If so, it could well be that they have told the supervisor. In any case, do not worry about it and just do the job you are employed to do. Have you heard from the prospective employee as yet? Telephone them and make enquiries about your application. Ask them if it has been accepted? Don't just wait around for days or weeks. Tell them you need a decision. Remember, this job is not the only one around, or is it?
