Question:

Can a powered subwoofer be hooked up using just the rca jacks and not the individual speaker wires?

I just installed 4 new infinity speakers in my car and although it's a huge improvement I'd like a little more bass. In looking at the powered subs out there many come with the individual speaker tie in's (for cross-over I'm assuming), RCA jacks and power wires. I don't want to go through the entire process of ripping the interior back apart to tie in all the speakers so I'm wondering could it be as easy as pulling the head unit and plugging in the 2 RCA jacks for both sound and power and just leave it at that??? Help please!

  1. Powered subwoofers usually include speaker-level inputs because they're made to be an easy addition to a factory system.  A powered sub needs an input signal from the RCA jacks, or from the speaker inputs; it doesn't need both.  If you're supplying a low-level signal through RCA cables, you can ignore the speaker connections.

Neither the RCA cables or the speaker wires will provide power, of course; power wiring needs to be run separately.

  2. You won't be able to do power from head unit unless you split it.

Best options it to buy an active sub, run power from your battery, remote and RCA from HU.

Something like this would do the job:
