I have model printer hp1012, and we're trying to set it up between three computers. the only connections i see are USB and one other (really long looking) connection...

Is it possible for all three of us to use it?... or...

  1. yes, just hook it up with one of the computers and make sure that its printer is shared with the other two. this option is included toward the end of the wizard when you first set up your local area network.

for the other two computers to use this, the same settings you used when you set up the LAN for the first computer with the printer must be the same. then make sure the other two computers have access to the printer. map the printer to make sure it is accessible by the others. after that, you simply need to make sure that the printer is on and that the pc it is connected to is also turned on.

  2. Yes it is as long as all of these computers are networked. All you have to do is install it on one of the computers and share it. Under Windows, simply install the printer as you normally would, go to Printers under the Control Panel, right click it and click Share.

Only make sure that the computer that has the printer physically connected to is always turned on so the printer can be made available. If you turn that computer off nobody else will be able to use the printer.

  3. Another possible option would be if you have a desktop computer which is connected to the network, you can plug the printer into that and 'share' the printer with the rest of the network. Here is an article on how to do this: http://www.pcstats.com/articleview.cfm?a...

  4. Yes.  Wireless technology.  Get them on a wireless network and buy a wireless print server.

  5. You could attach the printer directly to one of the computers.  Then set up a network of all three computers and turn on file and print sharing on the one that has the printer.  Then share the printer.

Then you install the printer on the other two machines as a network printer.  As long as the computer that actually has the printer attached is turned on, the other two can also print.  (This is called setting up a print server.)

    Here is the Vista url:

There is a similar setup for xp.  If you have both os, then there's a little more work... adding lltd to the xp computers.

  6. Only if you use a Printer switch hub or if you have a wireless network and the printer is wireless ready.
