Question:

Can a prior work of fiction accepted for publication prevent me from entering another writing contest?

The contest guidelines want writers who haven’t had a work of fiction published in a “magazine with a circulation of more than 25,000". But I had a story of an erotic nature published in a magazine in 2002 under a different name. Does this disqualify me from entering?

  1. I'm thinking that it does. But it never hurts to try.

  2. what was the circulation size of the  magazine that accepted yours? If it mentions the magazine had over 25,000 subscibers, then no, you can't submit it, and it doesn't matter WHAT name you used. Also, if you made any money off your story, the check sent to you would  have been to your real name, since the pen name is fictitious.

The only criteria for entering a contest are those stated. If it  says "no previous published considered" etc., then it doesn't matter WHEN it was published, it can't be used.

Find a book called "Writer's Marketplace", and see if the entries in it mention the number of subscribers: that ought to help. Good luck.

  3. I would suggest to check with the Organizers. Faster the better to know if your eligible to participate in the contest. If you are not eligible it will save your time and efforts in participating and later get disqualified.
