  1. Apparently, "Liberty City" passes for New York in Grand Theft Auto.  Also "Gotham City" in Batman.

Toronto is "Hogtown" or "The Big Smoke".

    New Orleans, "The Big Easy".

    to be continued...

  2. For London , England, ---The Smoke

    For Birmingham, England---Brum

  3. European authors sometimes give just the first letter of a town. "She has retired to a quiet life in G___, the town she loved best."

  4. Thomas Hardy renamed many places in Dorset in his novels.  Some of these alternative names are now so well known that local businesses use them in their business names.  For instance, an estate agents in Dorchester might call themselves 'Casterbridge Homes' (Casterbridge being Hardy's name for Dorchester), or you might see Weatherbury Builders as the name of a business located in Puddletown.  (I made up these examples because I can't remember offhand the names of real ones).  Hardy's names are also used when naming new roads, such as Casterbridge Road in Dorchester.
