Can a psychiatrist truly help with mental problems

Im 20 years old. When I was 13 I was hopitialized, and put on zoloft. Im 20 now. I dont truly see where a mental doctors has helped me. can they really help?

  1. Counseling can take years to be successful. It depends on the severity of the problem. 13 is pretty young to have problems. Do you still talk to someone. You should if you don't. If you don't think your Dr is helping, find another until you get the help you deserve.


  2. Mine helped me. I had extreme anxiety along with tourette's syndrome, paranoia, and panic disorder. He put me on paroxetine, clonazepam, and Risperdal and those drugs really helped me. I still have some problems but not nearly to the degree that I had them before.

  3. Yes, a psychiatrist can help, but

    you have to help yourself too.

    If doctor number two isn't helping,

    try a third one.  

    Pitch in too.  You have to

    want to move on, get better.

  4. Psychiatrists are medical doctors who usually focus on the medication aspect for mental health. Although medication can be important, it's difficult to find relief from problems if all you're doing is medicating them.

    I would encourage you to find a psychologist or therapist and see him/her at least once a week. They will talk with you and work through your problems and you will build your confidence.
