  1. a card reader connects to your computer and will allow you to read the content of cards which format it supports.

You need to make sure the cards used in your camera is supported.

It's quite common to find some card readers doing 10 formats or more but if it's slightly old and you camera is brand new it may not work out.

For example sor Xd cards type M would not work on older readers that don't support this type of Xd cards.

Common formats are Compact flash, Smart media (almost exctinct now), SD, Xd, memory stick.

Ther are variations on the SD format like SD HD (for cards 4GB and over) which some reders may not read.

also form factor: SD, mini SD and micro SD. You can use a physical adapter for these.

  2. The card reader does not work with the camera, it works with the flash memory card used in the camera.  If your camera does not use flash memory cards then you can't use a card reader.  Also, you would have to have the correct card reader for the flash memory card you have.

  3. Card readers are meant for computers to read memory cards. A digital camera already has a reader on it. In fact some cameras can be improvised as card readers.

  4. No, there is no card reader currently available with a slot for any specific or indeed any digital camera.  If there was such a device it would be called a digital camera card reader rather than just a card reader.

Card readers should certainly accept the MEMORY CARD from any digital camera, provided that you have a corresponding slot on the card reader.

The only likely exception to this that I could forsee would be in the case of microdrives (CF2) which require more power to be read as they are basically mini-hard drives.  If you use microdrives then you would be advised to check the individual model for compatability.

A second problem you may encounter is propriety file types, if  you use raw or .dng file types.  You would need to have the appropriate software on your computer to convert from the raw format to something like a jpeg or a tiff.
