  1. Yes! If you have a Volvo made since 1995 (colored silver). Older Volvo's do not have what is traditionally called a "gimbal" bearing.

To remove the gimbal bearing on you're Volvo you will need to remove the outdrive from the boat. Once the outdrive is off you can access the gimbal by inserting a special gimbal puller or slide hammer through the Universal joint bellows + pulling the gimbal out. Occasionally they stick and quite a bit of force is required.

Once you have removed the old bearing you can replace it with a new one. Make sure to Align the grease channel on the bearing with the zerk on the drive. It takes a large amount of force to install the new bearing. Make sure not to apply pressure to the inside of the bearing (if you do you may damage it). Once the new bearing is in you need to re-align the bearing/ engine/ drive package. This also requires a special tool. Then reinstall the drive.

This procedure (as you can see) does take special knowledge and tools and should not be performed by anyone but a trained tech. I'd recommend taking the unit to an authorized repair shop or trusted marine mechanic.

    Good luck!
