Can a rat live outside in a hutch? I know this might sound like a daft question but me and my friend were on about it earlier and she said she used to keep her pet rat outside - I thought they were "indoor" pets?

Also - what about hamsters?

  1. no not at all..

  2. They are indoor pets. Rats can get heatstroke in temperatures over 83 to 85 degrees I believe. Not to mention that they need to be out of the elements. Domestic rats do better indoors where there is airconditioning. And even when you dont have air you can close your windows and make it as dark as you can and it will regulate the temperature except when the temp rises really high. No matter what if the rat is outside you cant regulate that temperature. I would never put one of my girls outside ever.  I remember when I went to the store which was roughly 25 minutes away from my house to pick up a new baby rat. Then temperature outside was like 77 degrees. I didnt have air in my van but I thought the sun isnt beating down and the temp isnt that high she should be ok. Not so. Poor little girl almost had a heatstroke. And that temp wasnt even over 80 degrees. So in my opinion never never never house a rat outside.

  3. Rats and hamsters are indoor pets.  It would be cruel to keep them outside as they need to be kept warm.  Hamsters especially as they are nocturnal so out and about at the coolest time of the night.  Rabbits and guinea pigs can be keep outside during the summer months in temperate climates (for example the UK).

  4. NO, NO, NO!!!!!!!!!!! Nor rats or hamsters can live outside! They will die young and can catch diseases from other wild animal (wild rats, raccoons, etc.)

  5. nooo

however my rats love going for walks outside or playing in their cage in the garden but ONLY under supervision and during the day

they should NEVER be left outside to live unless you have a heated shed type thing

  6. No, I don't think they can. There is a good chance of it getting killed. They are indoor pets! Its like someone keeping you outside in a garage. The hamster and rat can escape and be crawling through the block or your house! I have 2 hamsters and I don't even bring them outside! What if it rains? eh? what do you suppose to do about that? the pet gets sick and everything is soaked! Not a great idea at all to my knowledge!

  7. Yes as long as you give it shelter and something to keep it warm in winter and food and water and a toy if they make thm for rats and we give my bunny a frozen water bottle in summer because the hot weathe ri dont now if it would be hot to a rat or not but if it is you could try it and clean his cage oftn to keep away flys because they lay larva in animals skins and they wll die from that so be careful!

  8. No.

    No.

    No.

No small animals like rats, gerbils, hamsters etc. can live outside. They can't stand the intense heat of summer or the freezing winters- they are also more prone to attack than being inside. They can also catch diseases from wild rats and other wild animals. Rats will suffer from breathing problems being outside; also, if they escape, there's no way to find them.

Rabbits and guinea pigs live outside with little problems, but rats and other small animals will suffer if left outside.

  9. no way they'll get  hiley sick get fleas and die

  10. NO. Rats can only withstand temperatures that humans can. So if your cold he's cold if your hot he's hot. The first answer is right there are so many reasons not to do it. It's absolutely not safe. Please Please Please a rat is not a rabbit. They are also extremly social animals and need a lot of attention and stimulation living in a hutch would be misery.

  11. no, it will die

  12. I totally agree with the first person who posted, no!

Think about the weather, the predators, and etc. Would you want to live in those conditions? You would probably get bugs in the food too! Hamsters should never live outside as well! Same goes for rabbits and guinea pigs!

All pet rodents are INDOOR animals!

  13. well i suppose they could but i persoaly wouldn't leave them out side, their tails might get cold lol =)

  14. yes

    yes

    yes

ive known alot of people who keep small animals in hutches outside and have even made a little fenced off area for them to run around and they dident get attacked or fall ill.
