Im thinking of starting boxing this summer.. It is easier for me to fight in a southpaw stance. (im a righty).. It kinda feels awkward to fight in an orthodox stance.. BUT, when i fight in a southpaw stance, my left is kinda weak.. So I wanted to know if I should stay with this stance? And any tips with my left hand? any advice is appreciated.

  1. If it feels more comfortable for you, then you should stick with it.  For some people there lies an advantage with fighting with your strong hand closest to your opponent- it gives you a stronger jab that you can easily hook and throw uppercuts off of.  As far as making your left hand stronger- "practice makes perfect" my man.  When you're working the heavy bag, throw 100 straight lefts from the southpaw stance and do this every day.  After a while, you will see improvement in the strength of your left.  Remember that your right is always going to be stronger because you are right-handed, but there's nothing that says you can't make your weaker hand stronger, see what I'm saying?  There are a few examples that I can think of where the fighter was naturally right handed, but chose to fight as a southpaw:

    Michael Moorer

    Marvin Hagler

    Winky Wright

    Manny Pacquiao

    Chad Dawson

  2. Awhile back pros did not fight left handed because no one would fight them.

So left handed fighters were converted.

They had a great left, jabs and hooks.

I think it would be the same for a converted right handed fighter.

A good jab will win many fights.

A good hook after a jab wins more.

Boxing is mostly balance, so a good stance is a starting point.

  3. of course they just have to learn how to fight southpaw, havent u seen miguel cotto switch to southpaw in his fights

  4. Marvin Hagler

  5. Of course you can. Right-handed boxers can fight southpaw just like southpaws (like myself) can fight right-handed. It's a good idea to get practice with both stances (like i've had to, lol). If you're worried about your left arm being weak, you'll probably have to work it more to strengthen it. Push ups, jump-roping, stretching, and doing jabs/straights/hooks with your left hand are all good ways to strengthen your arms. Remember, your punches don't just come from your arm, they come from your whole body. It's really satisfying to hear that nice "whack" on the gloves when you get a really good punch in. :-)  P.S. Technique is key. Make sure you're doing it right; don't just flail around looking to get a hard hit in.

  6. Sure,Michael Moorer fought south-paw (when he is in reality a right-handed person). Fought George Forman for the heavy-weight title and beat him. Thus becoming the first 'south-paw' heavy-weight champion of the world!

    But,not really.

  7. yes, I did, just depends on who and how your trained, though your power is always in your right arm and your jab can put a guy down, your left will never be really as strong as your right,I can fight orthodox or southpaw in a fight, switching to confuse an opponents rhythm.
