Can a small half-dollar size dial compass work for ghost hunting ?

I've heard of people using them in conjunction with seances and even ghost hunting, but I've honestly never seen it work in well over 30 trials, side-by-side with an EMF detector working in the same room. Generally, the compass will move when there's a field, but it's nearly impossible to locate the source of the field with any compass, let alone one which is that small.

This isn't to say it can't work under other circumstances, but between a compass and an actual EMF detector, I'll take the EMF detector every single time.

EMF detectors are by far more reliable for ghost hunting, because they don't pick up "false positives" as a general rule. They either pick up electrically-charged objects, or they pick up unknown fields that might be floating or moving.

EMF detectors can be purchased at most hardware stores.

Yes, it will.  Mine is only about 2.5 inches, and it works just fine.

A small dial compass is barely useful for detecting the magnetic north pole, as there are so many magnetic anomolies in the enviroment.

Those who claim to detect ghosts by this method first of all are biased in that they believe ghosts exist without any proof.  You can't then use magnetic anomolies to prove the existence of the thing you are trying to detect with them.  Why/how could ghosts, even assuming they exist, affect magnetic fields if they are non-corporeal?

As far as poltergeist activity, yes.  Just remember to guard against overreacting to false readings.  (Never know if you have some sort of electromagnetic interference.)
