  1. It depends on what state or states you are referring to.

Most states only have LCSWs. Some like South Carolina use the LMSW, but don't have LCSWs, they have LISWs instead.   I'm not sure what states have both the LMSW and the LCSW, but I do know that sometimes the LMSW is not

You can check the Association of Social Work Boards Laws & Regulations Comparison Guide.  I can not post a direct link to it because it times out.  The site is not very user friendly, so follow these steps closely:

The link below is to the ASWB website.  At the bottom right of the page you will see a link to the Social Work Laws & Regulations Comparison Guide.  Click on that to find the laws pertaining to the state or states you need the info on.

Next, choose your state from the dropdown, and don't get upset when nothing happens.

Next, go all the way down to the bottom of the page where it says "Individual Jurisdiction Details

(select state, province or territory above)"

Click the hyperlink just below that, the very last line of the page.  It is called "Summaries of Individual Jurisdictions."

That will get you the answer you need, I think.

Edit:  If this concerns the state of Texas, which uses the specific credentials you mentioned, here is the contact info below where you can get a definite answer:

  2. In NYS, there is both a LMSW & a LCSW.  The LCSW is more advanced & for independent practitioners.

Do you belong th NASW?  You can call & get state #.  You might also try the Dept of Educ. Div of Professionals.
