Can a square rigger sail into the wind using only jibs and staysails?

  1. well. it can point higher into the wind than with its square sails up; almost but not quite as close as a Marconi rigged boat.

    Problems are 1).jibs and stay sails represent such a small sail area, and  2) there is tremendous wind age in a square rig,,,,yards, braces, sheets, stays shrouds etc etc.... that most square riggers aren't going to move very well if at all just under the stay sails and jibs
