A stallion or colt that has been gelded can have viable sperm to breed a mare for 2 or 3 months after being gelded.  My vet advised me of this last year when I gelded a colt of mine.

gelded=castrated, meaning theres nothing left to produce sperm, but also nothing to keep sperm cool and viable. Within a matter of hours/day he would have been sterile.
