  1. I agree with everyone else.  Special education is not the same thing as a 504.  The only way a child with a 504 could receive help is if he or she were in Title 1 Reading or Math.

  2. Nope. You can't be both!

  3. A 504 plan only allows the student to have accomodations not modifications like an IEP. Accomodations are things like extra time, small group setting for test, scribe, someone to read to them. Modifications are when there is an actual change in the curriculum that simplifies the content for the student.

I realize this seems limiting but if the student is regressing even though they are recieveing accomodations, the team may need to look into the possibility of an IEP. Just because a student has an IEP doesn't mean they have to be in a special education classroom. The least restrictive environment can still be decided upon by the team. This would just mean that the student can recieve the pull out they need as well as curriculum modifications.

  4. Special education and a 504 are two different things.  A student can only have one of those, not both at the same time.

Sped students have an IEP, and Individual Education Plan and can be served in a variety of settings, including a pull out program.  They have a documented disability that affects their education, such as a learning disability or autism or mental handicap, among others.

504 students may have a disability, but they don't qualify for sped for some reason.  It can be a temporary condition, like an arm is in a cast and they need accommodations, or an ongoing one such as diabetes that doesn't affect their learning, but requires accommodations such as eating at certain times.

A student with a 504 can be pulled out for extra help with something such as reading or math.  Many schools now have teachers who work with students on remedial math or reading; the teacher may pull a small group to work with at a certain time each day, or go into the class to help the teacher.

However, a 504 student cannot be pulled out to participate in a special education program.  Only students who have qualified for ESE services and have an IEP can have a sped program.

  5. No. 504 plan is NOT special education. If this is happening it is illegal and the child has to have an IEP plan instead.
