Can a terrorist track a home computer and attack the US?

But, if you were IM a person from the Mid-East, can they? He was weird and 40.

And I had no Idea. I told him the state I live in too!

If you're sending messages to person in Mid-East I think you got other things to worry about like US ease dropping on you. May be the bigger problem might be some how getting your name on the US no flight list just because you communicated with a dude in Mid-East.

do not worry that you told the guy what state you are in.  it will not help him anyhow to track you.  if you did not give him your last name he has no way of finding out about you using publicly available info sources.

how vulnerable your computer is depends on a number of factors.  the proper level of security and consequently the proper level of limitations on the use of certain vulnerable soft ware depends on how confidential is the information that is kept on your computer.  in any case, instant messengers are particularly vulnerable to attacks as they open ports and directly communicate with the other computer, but it does take some qualification to perform such an attack.  

turn on the windows firewall (if it is not on yet), also consider using anti virus programs that constantly monitor for suspicious activities.  as to the instant messenger security, it is a separate question that you should better ask in another section (in any case i do not know the answer).

btw, how old are you?
