Can a tsunami travel 75 miles inland???

if you live in cali; from the ocean can a tsunami reach into the middle of northern cali? like sacramento?

  1. Not likely.  It all depends on the height and duration of the wave and the elevation and distance of your location.

    Although Sacramento elevation isn't terribly high, there are only two small gaps in hills protecting you.  The water would need to come through the Golden Gate, spread out in the bay area, then rush through the gap in the east bay hills, then rush half way across the valley all before it loses its energy.

    That wave would need to last near and hour, or be a series of ones longer than that if it was lower than the coastal hills.  I think those hills are around a thousand feet high.

    I think you don't have much to worry about.  In fact, the only people at risk, who are not close to coasts, are people at lower elevations on small islands in seismically active areas.

    You have a lot more danger crossing the street in front of your house.
