Question:

Can a tub surround be cut or bent to accomodate a sloped ceiling protrusion due to above stairway build out?

I live in an old house where the tub is located in the corner. Unfortunately the protrusion of the attic stairs above,is located approx. 2 feet in from the corner of the tub wall and 3 feet above the tub ledge. This forms a 45 degree angled wedge like protrusion on the back tub wall to the ceiling. I would like to put a tiled look tub surround in, but the only way I can do this is to cut the surround and attempt to join it to fit the 45 degree angle.Or possible bend the piece. But then have the side of the protrusion to deal with to. I know I could tile it, but would prefer not to. I cant move the tub. I had considered something called Aquatile, which is supposed to be waterproof tile board, but dont know how well that would work either. Any suggestions any one has for how to possible do this, or other materials that may work would be greatly appreciated. I hope this made sense, as it is very hard to describe. Thanks so much.

  1. Cut and caulk it. 100% silicone for baths. You shouldnt have any problems with flat panel goods. I use FRP fiberglass reinforced panels. they last forever but not as nice to look at as tile board. Good for rental property.

Also frp has caulk on corners 1in x 1in inside and outside corners. Might make the corner look nicer if your cuts are not tight enough to caulk..

    Measure twice cut once.

  2. They sell plastic channels at home depot, lowes etcetera that is mad e specifically for these tub surrounds... It is a thin narrow strip with slip in slots on each side..you cut the sheet and then the chanel  you slip the edge of the cut tub surround right in it from both sides..they slip in about 1/4 inch and are water tight, made specifically for situations like this.
