  1. No. Fans require a rheostat switch.

  2. Just read a book the addressed this question exactly.  A regular dimmer switch used to control the speed of a ceiling fan will ruin the motor.  Consult the book Wiring a House For Pros by Pros by Rex Cauldwell.

  3. no, dimmer switches may not be used for motor controls or flourescent lighting......... there are variable resistors designed for motors but that one isn't

  4. umm probably not most ppl like me have 2 different dimmer switches

  5. It depends on the type and brand of ceiling fan. Normal, ordinary ceiling fans will work with a dimmer switch. But, if you ceiling fan has also lights which can be dimmed, a reverse switch for the fan, etc. then you need a customized control which goes where the light switch goes. By three-way circuit if you are talking about two prongs and a ground prong then the dimmer switch should work fine.

But like I said, if the ceiling fan is a fancy, dancy Casablanca you are in for trouble.

  6. There are "dimmers" which are light duty and designed for use with lights. Then there are fan controllers which are designed to handle the load of an electric motor. If you use a light duty dimmer on a fan it won't last long and could even catch on fire.

  7. yes yup affirmative that is a go
