  1. Tomato blight

The fungal infection Phytophthora infestans spreads by wind and water-splash. It also attacks potatoes, and is triggered by warm, wet conditions, making outdoor tomatoes more susceptible than those in a greenhouse. The crop is quickly ruined, and even if it's immediately picked you can't stop the tomatoes rotting.

    SolutionOrganic

Remove blight-infected plants as soon as they are identified, to prevent spread to other plants.

    Chemical

Carry out repeated, preventative spraying the moment the first batch of tomatoes starts to set. Use fungicide containing mancozeb or copper. They don't provide 100 per cent protection, but an attack will be slowed down and you should get ripe tomatoes.

    Tomato leaf  mould

The fungus that causes this problem spreads rapidly in the warm, humid conditions of a greenhouse. It usually becomes apparent on the lowest tomato leaves from early or midsummer, which develop yellow blotches on the upper leaf surface. The leaves eventually turn brown and wither. If the problem isn't tackled, tomato yields are lower and the fungus can overwinter in the greenhouse and persist the following year.

    SolutionOrganic

Good ventilation in the greenhouse helps, with plants well spaced out. Avoid splashing the leaves when watering. Promptly remove and get rid of any infected leaves and destroy all the plants at the end of the season. Disinfect the entire greenhouse and choose resistant varieties such as 'Dombello' and 'Shirley'.

    Chemical

    Spray infected plants with mancozeb
