I want to take my van to pick up a friend at heathrow airport, but not too sure that the car park gate is big enough for my van to drive in.

No, the gates will be too small... There are car parks outside the airport that a minibus can ferry you in - but that will be time consuming... the other alternative is if you park/hang about outside the airport (There is a mcdonalds drive in) get your friend to call you on your mobile as they collect there cases and then arrange a suitable pickup point outside one of the departure zones in a parking bay outside the appropriate terminal area. But you must not stay there for long or you will be asked to move on or if you decide to leave the van alone it will be 'destroyed' by the police - with no excuses accepted.
