A tropical storm just passed and I noticed that water was leaking down from my upstairs neighbour's apartment into mine through my concrete ceiling. Is this dangerous enough to cause the building to collapse?

  1. No now , but the water make Rivers, remember New Orleans?

  2. Perhaps, if your ceiling has steel reinforcing in it.

The steel reinforcing will eventually rust and swell, breaking the concrete.

Water should not leak from your ceiling. Do you have strata title there? Get your body corporate to investigate and repair the cause. Water leakage will cause mould to grow which is very harmful to your health

  3. I don't know about a whole building, but it can cause pieces of concrete to fall.

  4. Water erodes concrete. You need a lot of it. You're probably safe.

  5. obviously I don't know what type of concrete building you are living in, I'm guessing the floors are made with sectioned spancrete. basically large sections of concrete set in rows on poured concrete walls. the concrete has hollow channels through it. if water finds it's way in, it can slowly drip out over days or even weeks. the severe weather you experienced may have been enough for water to find it's way in. having said that, many buildings are made with concrete exposed to the elements and last for generations. fear not.
