Question:

Can a water pump w/a small leak wait to be replaced?

I need to drive from CO to PA a few days from now and don't have time to get it to the repair shop. I was told it's a small leak, but could become serious if not taken care of. Has anyone dealt with this before and had major problems??? Thanks!

  1. In such a situation, a tube of Alum a seal ( trade name ) might work. You can get it at just about any auto parts store. In the morning when the car is cool remove the radiator cap and pour the contents of the tube directly in the radiator. Fill with water/coolant and drive for about 20-30 minutes. It's only a temporary fix, ( 6 minutes or 6 months ) but it might get you there. Just remember, it will not fix itself, and will progressively worsen. Carry a few gallons of water and NEVER open a hot radiator. Check the water every morning when the engine is cool.

I have driven from NM to CA with a very small water pump leak, and replaced it as soon as possible after my arrival. Hope it works for you.

  2. It depends mostly on how bad a shape the bearing shaft is, and if that's the cause of the leak. If it's because the shaft is going bad, it could let go altogether, and the pump could seize up. And even if that's not the case, of course you're going to want to keep a very close eye on your coolant level. Pretty risky for that long of a trip. Especially if your motor has an Aluminum cylinder head.

  3. water pumps can go quick, I would hate to be on the highway when it happens.

Bring it to have it checked, when they go, they usually GO, so a small leak sounds funny, could be just the gasket, or a hose, have it checked by someone else.
