  1. Yes, filter elements filter dirt out of the fuel, not the gas or diesel.  There are different levels of micron holes in the filters that you buy for your level of protection.  A gas engine will allow bigger contamination particles to pass though the fuel system with no damage, but the same size of contaminate would damage a diesel injector system costing thousands of dollars to repair/replace, so you would use a smaller micron hole size in a diesel filter element verses gas.

    The water separator part is the same, gas and diesel float on water so the water goes to the bottom of the filter in both cases and can be drained out as needed.

    As for below, there are different micron filters for diesel and gas, or for that matter water and hydrualic fluids also.
