I am a woman who hasn't worked very much in my life time. I am turning 62 in a few months. Can I draw social security at 62 if I haven't earned enough points. My husband won't turn 62 until June of ne?

  1. Since you didn't work, your ability to draw SS benefits is tied to your husband's earning history.

Since you are turning 62 before he does, the amount you will receive is reduced twice, but yes, you can apply now.

  2. You need to call the SSA with your question.  They can confirm that you do or do not have enough credits to draw a benefit now.

If you do not have enough credits to draw a benefit, and your spouse is not retired, you can't get a spousal benefit since it is a fraction of his benefit, and he probably doesn't qualify for a benefit (unless he is disabled, for example).

  3. the answer depends upon the state you live in . Social security uses the earnings of the last 16 ('quarters")[3 month perids] of her reported earnings. She certainly will collect some, plus possibly SSI [ Supplemental Security Incoome- varies from state-t state, + what her actually S. S. comes out to be] S. S. may only be a few hundred dollars per month, as little as $500.00.
