  1. I have a wisteria in a pot on my balcony (a really big pot, about the size of a bath tub).

I planted it this year and it's getting really big, and seems to be doing fine. I already covers 1/2 my wall.

Will have to wait and see if it will flower though.

It is included in my book on pot & container gardening. As long as it gets plenty (not to much water), and you add fertilizer 1ce a year it should be fine.

  2. Yes.  We put ours in a large pot while we moved to a new house.  We kept it in said-pot and it flowered for the first time (and was only 3 years old).  We've since planted it in the earth and it didn't flower this year.  I understand that keeping plants in pots can (slightly) distress them, resulting in them producing flowers when otherwise they wouldn't (such as with my wisteria, which is quite young and too young to flower if planted in the ground).

  3. Yes,, but it has to be LARGE: wisteria form quite large root systems. I would use half peat based and half John Innes type compost, with some horticultural grit added. Use longlasing fertilizer such as bone meal, early spring and early autumn. On initial planting use a general fertilizer such as Growmore.

  4. Climbers generally detest being in a pot as they do not like the unevenness of the watering. For the pot gets too dry and then too wet.Auto watering system are terrific.Wisterias will grow in Large pots and consistant watering.Never buy a wisteria unless you can see it flowering. So you have to wait until April

  5. Yes, wisteria can grow & bloom in large pots.

Here's the RHS page with illustrations on how to grow wisteria in pots & get them to bloom (scroll down the page):

Allow the plant’s leader to grow unchecked until it reaches the top of the support and then prune according to these instructions:

Suggestions from Garden Banter on  growing wisteria in pots & getting them to bloom:

"Try increasing light levels if you can...  bend some stems down and train horizontally...

Wisteria in the wild grow up very large trees... they have two growth forms a leafy strong growing getting there one, and once at the top of the tree they switch to a flowering growth... Tricking them into thinking they have reached the top of their tall tree involves restricting sap flow in the stems by either cutting them off in July and August or bending them down (which is what happens in nature)."

"Wisteria floribunda 'Macrobotrys' is a fabulous choice to containerise provided it has the benefit of full sun... growing it in a pot will help to check its growth but hard pruning will also be required."

    Good luck!!!!   Hope this helps.

  6. I have been growing the same wisteria in a large wooden barrel for the past 27 years.  It flowers beautifully every year and has the most magnificent trunk.

Provide adequate support from the outset.  Water and feed regularly and you will have a wonderful plant.

  7. yes. To get flowers you need to head back the tip and cut the laterals off fairly short after they start growing . The fruit wood arises in the buds that are the first 3 to 7 on a lateral branch. Clear as mud? Google wisteria pruning.

  8. Yes.  I've had one in a large container for about 6 years.  But it has never flowered.

  9. i cannot see why it would not grow as long as you have the right potting mixture and give it other nutrients and situate it in the right location
