With everything you need to know you should really get a guide. St Malo is small so I'm surprised to hear you say there's a university there.

St. Malo is a very nice small town. However, it is not really a city with all the amenities. There is a campus of the University of Rennes 1 (IUT Saint Malo) there but only for three highly specialized degree programs in business administration, industrial engineering and telecom engineering. In terms of public transportation, there are busses, but not within the old city (Intramuros). There is no subway system. To get there by train, from Paris, you can take a TGV to Rennes (about 2 hours) then the regional train from Rennes to Saint Malo (about 35-45 minutes). There are some good restaurants, if you like galettes, as that is the specialty of the region. Most places, restaurants and stores included, are closed for much of the year as St. Malo is a tourist area and outside of the summer months when a lot of French and British people are in Northern Brittany, there is not much going on.
