Question:

Can adding freon mess up by car's AC?

I'm kind of wanting to try adding a little freon (well, really r134a) to my 2003 Pontiac Vibe's AC system. The AC is working and cold, , but not as cold as it used to be, it seems. Or it could just be that it has been really hot this summer. .

But I don't want to run any risk of messing up the AC, if it doesn't really need refrigerant. I have the hose/trigger assembly because my old car had to be charged about once a week.

i'm way too poor to go have this done professionally. Plus, i'm too frugal for such things.

anyway. . should i go for it?

  1. Adding too much freon will mess the AC system up yes, if you want to DIY make sure that the hose/trigger assembly has a guage on it, keep the pressure no higher than 45 lbs.

  2. Dude check it out, an AC system is a balanced system. If there is not enough coolant then your AC will not work as good, too much coolant and you get the same thing, lowered performance. Look the specs up online for the correct amount of coolant. And if it is still not working the right amount is put in, then you may need a new compressor, they are usually over a hundred bucks, but are not too difficult to change, if you have some literature to guide you through the process.

  3. Your car will only take so much refrigerant so you should not mess anything up.  However it might be more than just the freon that is causing this.  You might have to bring it to a professional or just deal with the current temp until finances clear up.

  4. if you overcharge it, the system can work worse than it does now. i would save up the money and let a pro take care of it.
