  1. It can be switched off at any altitude.  But that would be almost suicide.  While any plane can glide for a while, eventually it will lose altitude.

As long as the engine is running, it will consume fuel.

    Good Luck...

  2. Well, theoretically yes, but not really ... first the movement of the plane will continue to turn the turbine - with or without fuel. Second, the physics of flight require the airplane to travel between specific speeds to maintain lift ... too slow it can not fly ... but also too fast it will not fly.

The higher the altitude, the closer that those two numbers get ... and since 40K feet is near or above the service ceiling of most commercial aircraft, I think that it would be important to keep the fuel on, and the speed within the very small range to continue flight.

  3. Yes.

An engine does consume petrol at 40,000 ft.

  4. Sure it can. And no, it won't consume any "petrol" at 40,000 feet if the engine's switched off.

I wouldn't want to be on that flight, though...

  5. you can turn the engines off whenever you want. but if you are at your cruising altitude, you will most likely drift down to a much lower altitude.because the other engine cant produce enough lift at such a high altitude. but the plane wont just fall out of the sky.. it will still be able to fly just fine.. just at a lower altitude.. plus it wont go nearly as fast..

  6. As stated the engines can be shut off whenever.

However if the engines were shut off at 40,000 ft, it would be very difficult to get them restarted at that altitude because the oxygen level is so low at that altitude.

I believe emergency relight procedures call for the plane to be below 15,000 ft.
