  1. It is definitely not the safest place to mount the TV.

But since it is probably the best spot you found and If it is a closed fireplace, my answer would be maybe it's oke to do this.

But read the User's Manual of your TV first. There should be a part about the environment (temperature, location etc) in which the TV can be used.

Just remember that safety should always be your first priority.

  2. Yes, absolutely. Today's living rooms often have the fireplace as the focal point and this is a very common application for plasma TVs today. I've tilt mounted a 50" over mine and it works fine and is the envy of the neighborhood.

First, get an accurate thermometer and tape it to the wall above the mantel or fireplace, where the Plasma TV would be. Build a fire, and let it roar awhile.Check the thermometer. If the temperature is above 90 degrees F then the area is receiving too much heat and you might want to consider another location. (Plasma TVs may still run without harming the unit even with the environment heat at 90 degrees F or above, check your units operating specs). If the plasma display is not turned on while a fire burns in the fireplace, then the unit will not be harmed at all even though the temperature surrounding the unit may be warm.

Cement wall anchors should be used with the wall mount to secure this application. If you're not comfortable with this, hire a professional. The bracket utilized should also be rated to the weight of the plasma.

  3. No it should not be. An HDTV should not be mounted or placed near any place of significant heat. This could damage the TV itself and undoubtedly void your warranty.

It could possible melt solder, diffuse colors in Plasma TVs and sometimes if it is a Plasma TV, the tilt of the screen, if it is too great, can cause some of the gasses inside the screen to physically rearrange and it can mess up your screen.

Bottom line is, NO, do not mount your flat panel HDTV over your fireplace.
