There were a few US Military that won medals the the Olympics this year. Are those Olympic medals considered an "Award or Decoration earned in service"?

If so, is there an Olympic service stripe for a regular working uniform and would the Olympic medal be worn in a mess dress for special dinners and other formal functions?

  1. Like the blunt folks before me, I'll say the answer to those questions are all no, with one caveat: I'd love to see someone (in or out of the military) dare to tell that military member and gold medal Olympian to take it off.

Edit: Yeah, I know what the regs are.  As military PA/PR, I can tell you, he'd have that on (in uniform) at every photo op possible.  Yeah, maybe not when he was cleaning latrines or in the middle of combat, thanks!

  2. Simple answer.....NO

They are not covered by AR 600-8-22

  3. 3rd NO, it's a strike out.

    It's not in 670-1 either.

Geez Kojak, now I got to look up your AR. I know more now than when I was in thanks to the "information age"

    SSG US Army 73-82

    Edit: Kojak already downloaded that.

Gwen, the very 1st person senior to someone foolish enough to wear that while in uniform would simply be told "Congratulations Soldier, job well done! NOW TAKE IT OFF!!!"  We might see some photo ops were they are staged with them. but they will not be allowed to wear those around their necks beyond a few staged events. The only award worn in that fashion is The MOH!

  4. While I agree that it's unauthorized - I have to agree with Gwendolyn... Especially in today's climate.

  5. uh no, its not part of the uniform so it cant be worn, but its not like they have to be in uniform all the time, they can wear it all they want in civilian clothes
