diesel cars can run on most types of oil including vegitable oil. Can a crop of vegitables produce more oil or ethonol. I believe that biodiesel contains more BTU's per gallon that ethonol. I am just wondering how many BTU's can a crop produce?

  1. Corn produces both corn oil and sugar that can be made into ethanol. It contains other food components that may be almost as important if properly handled.

So there is not a need to make a decision, we take both corn oil and ethanol, and then the rest is food.

The amount of food produced after extracting oil and sugars is smaller, but it has more nutritious value per ton. Note however that it is still not an adequate primary staple for the diet.

  2. 140 bushels an acre average=392 gallons of ethonal at 76,000 btu per gallon

    #2 diesel 140,000 per gallon

    raw oil 130,00 per gallon

    100% bio 130,000 per gallon

The information on how many btu's it takes to make each product depends on which side of the issue the research is from.(At least what i've read)

  3. A bushel of corn can yield about 2.8 gallons (18.5 pounds) of ethanol.  The same bushel has about 2.24 pounds of corn oil (see the link), assuming it can all be recovered.  There's a lot more energy in the ethanol.

BTW, simple alcohols all have names ending in "-ol".  Ethanol is a chemical variant of ethAne, so it is spelled ethAnOl.  MethAnOl is a variant of methAne, etc.

  4. i think corn should be used to feed livestock so you can have food on the table.....not to be put in cars.
