Question:

Can an adoptee go to court to be "unadopted" as an adult?

I was adopted at six years old. My adopted mother was very physically and emotionally abusive. I have cut off all ties to my adoptive family. Is there any way for an adoptee to legally undo an adoption? I have tried looking on the internet, but all it caters to is prospective adoptive parents or reuniting with birth parents.

  1. Oh - I so wish this could be done - but sadly - no.

Like others have mentioned - you need to get someone to adopt you again - for the original adoption to be void.

Adoptive parents can send you back - as a child - but adult adoptees aren't allowed to un-adopt themselves.

    Sorry.

  2. I've only heard of one person doing this successfully and he had to prove that the adoption had been illegal.

People return adoptees all the time and call it "disruption"  I think the Adoptee should be offered the same option to "disrupt", particularly in situations such as yours.

Best of luck and I'm so glad you are free of your abusers x

  3. since your an adult, no.

u can change your last name if you want.

  4. if ur over 21,they are no longer ur legal gaurdians,so it would be a moot point to be unadopted now-they are no longer in charge of ur life or decisions,u can avoid them for life if u choose.if carrying there last name bothers u,u can legally change it to ur birth parents names if u kno bio mother or fathers names,or u can choose any name u like and legally change it to that-its easy, simple and costs about 180 dollars-u need a lawyer to do this.sorry this happened to u,my fiance was adopted by a distant dad and an abusive mom,i kno it was just a terrible situation for him.but he found his own life as an adult.avoid them, and go on to enjoy ur life, dont let them get u down.theres a whole world of better friends/spouse waiting for u !!!!!if u are under 18,u can become an "emancipated minor",a system by which u disconnect legally from bad abusive parents whether u are adopted or related biologically.but it sounds like u are above that age.

  5. I'm so sorry for your c**p childhood.  As doodles...whatever said, if you get adopted as an adult, you can essentially erase your past parents.  Your birth certificate would be "amended"...essentially changed to reflect the people who adopt you as your "parents".

  6. Ask at a courthouse.

  7. No, there is no legal way unless you are adopted as an adult by someone else.  Whether you cut them off or not, they remain family unless you have someone else adopt you.  Believe me, there are plenty of people who wish they could end their legal connection with their natural parents for similar reasons, but alas, you are stuck.
