My father was born in Belfast in 1949 and moved to Australia at the age of 12.

Is it possible for me to get a British passport, and what laws would allow this (ie right of abode etc)?

  1. Advising on immigration is very complex and most advisers, unless they are registered, can only give you information on immigration up to level 1. Can I suggest you contact the Embassy, or your immigration advisory service for specialist advice.

  2. I would speak to your nearest British Embassy for clarification, you'll need to apply to them for the passport any way so you could get two things done at once.

If you were entitled to a British passport, you could still retain your Australian citizenship & passport but you could travel on the British passport and be treated as a British citizen in Europe and the UK.

You could also investigate the possiblity of getting an Irish passport.
