The vehicle is a 1997 Dodge Grand Caravan that I have been working on since August. The transaxle has begun slipping out of and/or not going into gear after starting it. I know it needs a rebuild but right now I need to let my family know if it slip out of gear while being driven around town or out of town.

  1. They don't slip in and out of gear.

    The clutches fail.

I'm not sure what your question really is.

If the trans is slipping now, there is a very good chance it will fail on the road.

  2. try the oil first!

  3. Caravans and neons are famous for transmissions failing.  If its slipping, has transmission codes and the fluid is perfect you need a new or rebuilt one asap.

  4. Check your belts and make sure that isnt whats slipping and causing the feeling.

Take it to an automotive shop and have them run a check on the transmission, sometimes they get wacky if they aren't serviced properly.

  5. I had a bonneville that would slip out of gear and keep accerlating.  Didn't have to push the gas to go.
