My friend Sam is divorced and has a eleven -- year -- old son, Ben . Ben's mother has custody of him . When Sam was much younger ( at the age when tattoos are “hip†and “cool†), he got a few tattoos . At this point, Sam regrets ever getting the tattoos . Lately, Ben's been talking about getting his own tattoo . Ben's mother will let her kids do whatever they want . She'd approve a tattoo in a heartbeat . Sam's worried that Ben might get a tattoo behind his back . Ben's mother might have to sign a paper saying it's all right for Ben to get a tattoo . Wouldn't Sam have to sign as well ? Would a tattoo artist give an eleven -- year -- old boy a tattoo without both parents' permission ? I know there are tattoo artists who will do anything for money, but would they want to be involved in a dispute between two parents ? Wouldn't the law require both parents' permission before Ben could get a tattoo ? I'm not sure eleven years old is old enough to make that decision . Would the law allow an eleven -- year -- old boy to get a tattoo ? Does Sam have any reason to worry ?
