Can an employer demote you after giving you a satisfactory evaluation?

Today I was demoted to a lesser position on my job based on some derogatory and inflammatory remarks made by co-workers. This after receiving a satisfactory evaluation with recommendation for pay raise next year.

If you're civilian (which I'm guessing), you might want to go speak with the EEO componency office.  If your performance evaluates you to receive a pay raise and you get demoted in position because of malicious words by your co-workers, then file a complaint for slander.
