work for a sub contractor , I get a phone call everyday to tell me if I am working that day, My boss will fine or dock a day's pay from me if I don't answer my phone. When i call him back he tells me that I have to work that day and he is going to fine or dock my pay for that day. So I would be working that day for free. Can he do that ? I live in CT

  1. In the US, generally, no.

  2. an employer can deduct from your pay for expenses like a broken plate, but they cannot "fine" you. call the local labor board.

  3. NO.  What are they trying to fine you for?  If you damaged something at work, they can doc a certain amoubt from you check.

  4. no, they cannot legally make you work without pay...that would defeat the whole purpose of a job...

  5. where i live no.

    if i work paid..

    if fined??  off work

  6. Why are you being "fined" a day's pay? Are you having to pay something back? In tht case yes. Otherwise, no.

  7. certainly not no !! take the b*st*rds to court!!!!!

  8. Not in Canada

  9. The employer cannot legally fine you he  can withhold a days pay if he feels you have not done your work or some other breach but he cannot make you work a day without pay, what he will have to do is withhold a days wage from your upcoming wage packet. The only place i know that can fine you a day or week etc is in the military and even then there has to be a military court case
