Can an employer rescind a job offer that is conditioned only on a medical exam?

I have a job offer from a company that is conditional only on a medical exam and drug test. Can they rescind that offer if I didn't fail those tests? They rescinded it on the 8th, and they didn't ask that I start until the 25th.

  1. Sure they can.

Did you ask why they rescinded it? It probably wasn't the medical exam. Maybe something was found on your background check, but if so, they would probably ask you before rescinding the offer.

More likely, they either lost their budget for the position, which is increasingly common these days, or something else that had nothing to do with you happened.

You really ought to call and ask about it. Ask if there are any concerns you can clear up for them, and also whether they might consider you for other positions that open up in the future. Keep it low-pressure and friendly, since you want the door to stay open.
