  1. An inner ear infection could cause the symptoms... also a problem called vestibular disease. It also effects the inner ear and throws off the dogs sense of balance. You would see a head tilt in one direction, and when you hold the dogs head still the eyes will often shift side to side. It is common in older dog and care is usually supportive. An inner ear infection and this vestibular disease are not, in of them selves, a reason to consider euthanasia. A visit to the vet will determine the exact cause and treatment that your companion will need. I wish you luck, and hang in there.

  2. No its not a good reason to PTS an other wise healthy dog. Talk to your vet and see what he says as far as the falling down and inability to get up is concerned.

  3. Ask the vet, but ear mites can lead to an infection too. Earmites can cause the dog to scratch ears and shake head.

Ear infections can cause an imbalance in the inner ear.  An ear infection in an older dog, especially if left untreated can lead to other, worse health problems.  I know you have prob. already heard this, but the dog needs to see a vet, pronto!

  4. Your dog should see a vet asap.  An inner ear infection left untreated will start to stink.  You will see some black stuff on the inside of the ear.  They will shake their head and scratch the ear quite a bit.  I do not think the dog would fall down and not get back up from an ear infection.  Something else is going on here.  My 3 golden retrievers get ear infections all the time because of all the swimming they do.  A antibiotic will clear up the ear infection.  Please call vet and make an appointment.  Good luck.

  5. of course its not a reason to euthanize a dog, and if she couldnt stand, maybe the infection got so bad it started to effect the brain and maybe it got to the part of the brain that control standing

  6. yes, an ear infection could cause the dog to fall like that. But, it's pretty easily treatable, so it's not a good reason to put the dog down, unless there's other reason too.
