Can an interview attire make or break the interview?

I know its important to wear a suit and tie to an interview. I just want to know if companies are strict about the type of color and pattern on the suit. Most people say to keep away from black suits for interviews. I am going to wear a navy blue suit tomorrow with a subtle pinstripes but it looks black when there is not that much light. I know its better if it is just a solid color. I am thinking if I go there and answer the questions well and show them that I can be a good fit with the company culture. I think thats more important than me wearing the standard interview suit.

  1. as long as it's clean and you look reasonably business-like, you're set.  don't worry about the strictest rules of the game (and that's exactly what it is)

  2. What's a suit?     If a suit can do the work I want done then I will go to the clothing store and buy a whole rack of suits.   As far as I am aware there is no holiday pay for suits, they will work 24/7 with no coffee breaks or lunch breaks, heck....sounds like a great team.

That sounds silly, right?   If you come there clean and have what I am looking for when I need it, I don't care if you have the proper attire.   If I hire you, I WILL TELL YOU WHAT THE ATTIRE WILL BE (I HOPE YOU ARE PARTIAL TO KILTS).

  3. I think the rule is not to wear a suit that looks like Ky. Derby horse blanket!  A key to a good impression is for a man to have shined shoes.  Your suit is fine.  It is just a matter of not being LOUD!!  Good luck.

  4. Your suit sounds fine.  I interviewed candidates for 20 years in a high tech firm.  Most of them were over-dressed for the interview, but that was kind of expected.  What was much more important was how they answered the questions.

An interview is a matching game: Are you right for the job, and (just as important) is the job right for you?  So, listen to what they say, and ask questions as well as answer them.

Don't forget to smile.  A nice smile will make that blue suit look great.

  5. as long as it's tasteful, clean, fits well, and not dated, then what you describe sounds fine. if it's got real wide lapels like its from the 70s or is double knit polyester then you're in trouble. color doesn't matter all that much. purple is right out, as is baby blue. but you'll be fine in what you describe.

  6. Don’t listen to everyone.  I have only worn black suits to interviews, and I have gotten every job I interviewed for. Wear a white, blue or gray shirt; stay away from anything that is too loud (i.e. pink, lime, etc).  Clothes are important, but so is not smelling like smoke and do not be chewing gum.  Clothes are important but appreaence and posture is even more important.  Eye contact while you shake their hands and keep from looking at the ground.

  7. I think it matters more about your answers to the questions as long as you look presentable. Whatever you do decide to wear, be confident and smile. Answer the questions with confidence. Good Luck!

I don't know where you are applying but look up the company's web site if they have one. They should have pictures and things on there. (knowing some facts will help too) That may help. Also if you know anyone that works there, it may be a good idea to ask them.

If you have a close friend, ask them if you look good in the suit, but i think your going to be find. Just don't wear wild colors like neon, or animal print...etc...

You said something about black suits...I think that depends on how you look in a black suit....
