Im in the Army National Guard as a 19D-cavalry scout currently and will be enrolling in the SMP program which is the simultaneous Membership Program that the Guard offers. After four years of ROTC I will be an officer and that is the path I'd like to take.

That being said, my main goal is to reach SF. If I become an officer would I be able to go for SF as like a weapons sgt or a combat engineer? any else besides being an SF officer.

Also, anyone knows how much SF gets paid?

  1. Special Forces are Soldiers like any other as far as pay.  They get deployed more and are on Airborne status, so they get those pays.

As an officer, you apply for special forces when you are Captain.  There is a selection, then you go to Q-Course and your Special Forces Officers course.  You learn specifically how to be a Special Forces Officer, and how to manage Weapons Specialist and others on a team.

  2. My boyfriend is a Weapons Sgt..  I don't know why you would go to school to be an officer then go into SF?  You realize you also have to be selected, you can't just apply for it...  Officers make more than Weapons Sgts do..  My boyfriend just got promoted to an E6 the other day and he makes around 35,000 - 40,000 a year..

  3. you could go SF however you wouldnt be able to be a wpns sgt or such u would be an 18A and i think u have to be a cpt to go to selection as an officer and you would end up incharge of a SF team if your lucky and as far as pay on top of basic pay they make multiple other staus pay (jump, haz lang, etc...) but i dont know exact numbers

  4. yes and no.  SF gets paid like everyone else but since a) they are on special duty of sorts like jump, sniper and that c**p they get alot and I mean ALOT! more money.  and B) your army you guys have more money than god knows what to do with Im sure theres plenty of officer incentives, sf incentives and the such.  however beware My older brother enrolled in the same program and now hes heading to iraq.

  5. You must be a 1LT (Promotable to Cpt) or a Cpt. to apply for SFAS.  You must also have a Secret clearance and be eligible for a TS and score well on the DLAB.

You won't be a weapons "Sgt." because that's an enlisted rank. Combat Engineers are a conventional MOS, SF has Engineer Sgts, which again is an enlisted MOS.

SF officers hold the MOS of 18A.

    The Official Description is:

"Special Forces Detachment Commander (18A). Commands or serves on the staff of Special Forces units. Serves in positions requiring general Special Forces experience or training. Serves as a Commander, Staff Officer, Advisor, Exchange Officer, Plans and Operations Officer, and service school instructor in positions requiring Special Forces experience or training. Conducts area studies of potential operational areas, acquiring detailed knowledge of their geography, economy, political structure, armed forces, and history. Develops and maintains foreign language capability. Plans, controls and executes foreign internal defense, strike operations, strategic reconnaissance, unconventional warfare, and other related special operations. Develops interpersonal and communicative skills to facilitate interaction with foreign officers, soldiers, and civilians."

There's a lot more do it than that. Just remember, as an 18A your actual team time will be limited to one or two tours, then you move on.

If you want to spend your entire career on an active ODA, you'll need to remain enlisted.
