Question:

Can an oil furance be converted to a gas furance?

We have a cast iron oil burning furance, (with cast iron radiators) we were told that there is a conversion kit to change out the oil nozzles to use this furance as a gas buring furance. (I do have gas service to my house, and will be switching out the hot water tank also.) Thank you.

  1. Someone probably still makes a conversion kit but it would be cheaper to just buy a gas furnace.

  2. Probably; many years ago (the 80's I believe), we had a new oil boiler installed.  A few years later, had it converted to gas, since it was relatively new.  This involved replacing the oil gun with a somewhat-similar looking gas burner, changing the control, redoing the stack, and of course running the gas pipe.

It's performed flawlessly over the years, probably saving money versus oil prices, but of course that varies a lot over time.

However, no matter how skilled you think you might be, I just can't see this as a DIY project, because messing with gas in most jurisdictions requires licensed contractors, inspections, etc.  Not to mention the idea of not s******g it up.

I guess if you had a friendly cooperative installer, you can HELP, at least saving some time by removing the old components.

But y'know what a lot of these guys will say, it's $500 if I do it myself, $1000 if you help.
